To be honest, the book was a little boring to me at first. Gradually, you start to hear the voice. Not the “I’m an author writing a story” voice, but a “This is ___ she has a story. Let’s listen”
With the two books by her, I’ve read, she has this strong powerful voice. She doesn’t outshine the characters. Like in her book A Trick of the Light, [Lois] makes her characters so painfully human in ways we don’t care to admit. The voices are strong and powerful.
she talks more about it in an interview here

Change Places with Me is about a girl named Rose who seems to just wake up one day and feel different. She wasn’t scared of her next door neighbor’s dogs, she talked with her mom during breakfast, talks to her friend…that she hadn’t spoken to as friends in years. She doesn’t know it, but I’ll tell you:
Rose is not Rose.
Set in the near future, Rose wants to change her life. Get rid of her fears, grief, etc. I won’t go into too much detail, but it will give you a More Happy Than Not by Adam Silveria vibe (in a good way) It’s a strange, dystopian, coming-of-age novel that fans of Adam Silveria, Gayle Forman, and Nina LaCour will adore.
